Junyuan Broadcast @ Studio 91
Students are provided with opportunities to broadcast current events, upcoming school events, share their personal stories of the events they experienced in the school or outside school or even interesting information or facts on the various subjects that they had learnt in school. This opportunity provides students to learn collaborative in an authentic environment as they get to prepare scripts about current issues or topics and speak to “real audience” - their peers.

Roving Reporters
Students are given the opportunities to take on the role as reporters. They write their own scripts and report on school events. They also get to interview teachers, parents and students to find out how they feel about the event. To be able to think on your feet, remain poise and confidence when the camera rolls could be nerve wracking but our students rise to the occasion. READING PROGRAMMES
Enhanced Library Instruction Programme (LIP)
Our comprehensive LIP is designed to cultivate passionate readers and critical thinkers, nurturing lifelong readers and learners. By exposing students to diverse genres and engaging them in meaningful reading-related activities, we aim to ignite a passion for reading that extends far beyond the classroom. This is in line with STELLAR’s aim where we want our pupils to ‘Learn to Read’ and progress to “Read to Learn’ in their primary school years.
At the lower primary, students explore the literary landscapes, introducing them to varied genres such as fiction, fairy tales, humour and non-fiction. There is special focus on topics like animals and amazing facts with engaging activities that have been designed to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the different text types.
In the upper primary, students develop research and literacy skills. Focusing on developing visual, discipline and digital literacy through non-fiction texts, they participate in exciting book hunt sessions in the school library and online activities, create book summaries, word splashes and fact sheets based on chosen topics.
Below are the reading programmes which the children will be engaged in:
- Reading Journey (P1 – P3)
For our young readers, the adventure begins with learning how to choose books that spark their interest. With their chosen book, students will complete thoughtful and manageable book reviews, share with classmates and library teachers to encourage discussion and reflection about the book read. Upon completing their Reading Journey book, students earn a delightful keychain featuring our JYPS Little Life Skills Family.- Reading Passport (P4 – P6)
As our students mature, so does their reading independence. The upper primary students will explore a wider variety of books. They will record this in their book record and collect a stamp in their Reading Passport for each book read. After completing each page of the Reading Passport, they will write a book review on one of the books to redeem exciting prizes.- Book Flood (P1 – P6)
Across all levels, a set of age-appropriate library books are accessible to all students in the classroom to promote the love for reading, especially for those who may have difficulty finding appropriate books on their own. For the upper primary, the books are made available for them to read in class anytime they have finished their work. This encourages every student to read widely and frequently and develop positive reading habits starting from the classroom.- Make a Corner Bookmark Contest (P2 – P3)
A self-directed activity that motivates students to read with their own DIY corner bookmarks. Tapping on our online learning system, SLS, students access a lesson on making a corner bookmark, create their own and showcase it during recess to earn tokens.- ‘Did I Get It Right?’ Quiz (P4 – P6)
This quiz on SLS promotes our school library books, develops students’ ability in listening actively and making educated guesses about book content, themes and genres, encouraging them to explore the school library.- Reading Opens Doors Contest (P5 – P6)
Over four weeks, students are to write the name or draw their favourite books and explain why they like them. These will be displayed attractively on classroom doors. The class with the best decorated class door will receive attractive tokens.- Reading Journey (P1 – P3)
Through these carefully crafted programmes and contests, we are not just teaching students to read – we are inspiring them to become passionate, lifelong readers and critical thinkers. Our LIP programme has proven highly effective in promoting a vibrant reading culture amongst our students.
Library Ambassadors Programme (P4)

At the heart of our vibrant school library and reading culture lies our Library Ambassadors Programme. This peer-led approach cultivates public speaking skills, sparks curiosity about the different literary categories, encourages students to explore books in our school library and promotes a school-wide culture of reading and book appreciation.
This initiative empowers Primary 4 students to become champions of literature as they facilitate the following activities and competitions:
- Read-aloud Sessions (P1)
During pre-morning assemblies, lower primary students bring stories to life with dramatic readings, harmonising voices to sing a tuning-song and sharing captivating tales with the school community.
- Storytelling Competition (P4)
Unleashing imagination and building confidence, our annual Storytelling Competition is a celebration of creativity, literacy and public speaking. This exciting event ignites a passion for storytelling, showcases our library's diverse book collection and builds students' confidence in public speaking. Through this competition, we aim to provide a platform for our young storytellers to demonstrate their narrative skills and captivate audiences with their unique interpretations.
- Read-aloud Sessions (P1)
Within or After-school Curriculum Literacy Programme (P1 – P5)
In our school, we provide comprehensive support for students who need extra help with their literacy skills. This support is seamlessly integrated into both our regular curriculum and/or after-school programmes. We are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to improve their reading and writing abilities, regardless of their starting point.
- STARLETS Programme(P1 & P2)
This programme enhances students’ reading abilities by targeting the foundational reading and comprehension skills, phonological awareness and alphabetic principle through engaging and meaningful reading activities. It has helped build students’ confidence in reading and speaking, making them effective and confident communicators.- MOE Reading Support Programmes (P1 - P4)
Students who require further support in reading are enrolled in the following programmes according to their needs. * Learning Support Programme (LSP) a.k.a. Rainbow Classes (P1 & P2) * Reading Remediation Programme (RRP P3 & P4) * School-based Dyslexia Remediation (SDR) Programme (P3 & P4) * Reading Remediation Programme (RRP P5 Phase 1)- STARLETS Programme(P1 & P2)
Partnership with National Library Board (NLB) for Whole School Reading Programme
Our school is delighted to collaborate with NLB to promote reading and literacy. The collaboration centres on their popular NLB Book Bugs: School Edition Activity booklet, which provides engaging and interactive self-directed activities for students to complete and collect unique Book Bugs stickers and cards in school.
Our partnership extends beyond the Book Bugs programme. The school hosts NLB-led assembly talks, including captivating storytelling and Book Buzz sessions that bring books to life for our students.
Through these varied activities, we hope our students will visit public libraries more frequently and cultivate a lifelong passion for reading.
EVENTS
Library Festival
We celebrate the magic of words and stories through our annual Library Festival. This vibrant event honours literature, creativity and learning. Each year, we transform our school into a wonderland of books, with a unique theme that sparks curiosity and imagination. Through engaging games and activities during recess in English and Mother Tongue languages, students discover the joy of reading whilst expanding their knowledge in fun and interactive ways.

- A Book Character (ABC) Day (P1 – P4)
Watch our younger students bring their favourite literary characters to life! Students dress up as their beloved book characters and parade during recess. They also have the opportunity to share about their chosen characters. This fosters a love for reading and encourages creativity through joyful learning. The best-dressed book character will receive prizes!
- Similes and Idioms Fun Day (P5 – P6)
Our older students dive into the playful world of figurative language! They dress up to represent a chosen simile or idiom and participate in an interactive guessing game during the recess parade. This not only enhances understanding of figurative language in a fun and memorable way but also encourages exploration and enjoyment of the English language’s quirks and nuances.
- A Book Character (ABC) Day (P1 – P4)
These engaging activities promote a love for reading, boost creativity and self-expression, enhance language skills and vocabulary, foster a sense of community through shared literary experiences, making learning enjoyable and memorable.
